As we age, our teeth begin to weaken and become more vulnerable to issues such as decay, cracks, discoloration and others. If these issues have affected you, and your smile isn’t quite what it once was, dental crowns may be able to help restore your smile. If your dentist notices that a tooth has been affected with decay or has weakened/cracked, then we may recommend a crown in order to prevent further complications with your tooth. Generally, a crown is only recommended when a filling or bonding won’t be sufficient.
Dental crowns may be made from:
We recommend a porcelain finished crown due to its natural look, which allows us to match it to the shade of your other teeth. This way, your crown will blend in with the rest of your smile, and nobody will be able to tell the difference.
The process for installing a crown takes approximately 2-3 visits to the dentist. During the first visit, your tooth will be reshaped by filing the enamel down to allow the crown to be placed over it. We use a local anesthetic for this procedure so that you will not have to endure any pain or discomfort. After we have finished reshaping, we will take a mold of that tooth, and the surrounding ones.
We will send this mold to a dental lab, where your new crown will be made to fit perfectly into the spot and look completely natural. The dentist will place a temporary crown on your tooth until the permanent crown is ready.
It will take about 2-3 weeks for the crown to be finished. Once we receive the permanent crown, we will call you to setup an appointment for final placement. When we place the crown, we will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, and use a cement-like material to set the tooth in place. When you take a look in the mirror, you’ll be delighted to see that you have your full smile back!
Dental crowns are very durable, and can last 10-15 years when properly cared for. Maintaining your crown is the same as the rest of your other teeth, with daily brushing and flossing.
